Alliance Medical strengthens its mobile fleet with new PET/CT and cardiac enabled MRI scanners

Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Alliance Medical, Europe’s leading independent provider of imaging services, has enhanced the diagnostic capabilities of its mobile operations with the addition of two mobile cardiac enabled MRI scanners, four mobile PET/CT scanners and two support vehicles.  The new mobiles represents a £10 million investment by Alliance Medical as part of the company’s commitment to provide high quality MRI and PET/CT scanning services across England.

The two Siemens Avanto MRI scanners will enable Alliance Medical to supplement its current capacity for routine MRI examinations with a robust and reliable cardiac MRI service. The scanners will be used across the UK in the areas with the highest demand for cardiovascular imaging. The cardiac optimisation feature of the new mobile MRI scanners translates into high quality, fast imaging of the cardiothoracic anatomy and its function for quicker and more accurate diagnoses. The scanners can also produce images of the whole heart, which will allow clinicians to examine complex structures and conditions in greater detail.

In January, NHS England selected a collaborative network led by Alliance Medical to provide PET-CT scanning services across 30 locations in England, following a competitive tender process.  The four new PET/CT mobile scanners will be used to perform scans at mobile locations across the UK for this contract.

The new GE Discovery 710 PET/CT scanners feature cutting-edge image reconstruction software to provide excellent image quality for small lesion detection and more accurate images, helping to provide an accurate and reliable diagnosis. Furthermore, the trailer that houses the scanner features two uptake rooms instead of the usual one. This modification increases the number of patients who are able to be scanned in a day, leading to shorter waiting times for patients. Alliance Medical has further expanded its PET/CT fleet with the purchase of two new mobile support vehicles. These units will allow scanning services to be delivered to sites which do not necessarily have the optimal support facilities. The support units include a reception area, toilet and a further two uptake rooms which allows for a further increase to the number of patients who can be scanned at a location, ensuring that patients diagnostic and treatment pathway is optimally designed.

With the purchase of the new scanners, Alliance Medical now operates over 40 mobile units across the country and over 50 static facilities through partnerships with NHS Trusts and private hospitals.

David Loasby, Business Development Director of Alliance Medical, said: “We are thrilled to be in a position that allows us to expand our mobile fleet with such high-performing scanners. This investment ensures that we are staying at the forefront of diagnostic provision, and responds to the increase in demand for cardiovascular imaging throughout the country. More importantly, it enables us to provide faster access to an effective, specialist service to those patients who require cardiac MRI and PET/CT scanning.”
