Former Olympic star sails in to unveil new Ashford MRI scanner
Former Olympic athlete, Sarah Ayton OBE, joined Alliance Medical and Ashford Hospital staff to launch its new state-of-the-art Signa Explorer MRI scanner at a special launch event on Tuesday (3rd November). The new scanner represents a £1.4m investment by Alliance Medical and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The new GE Signa Explorer 1.5T MRI scanner will enhance the diagnostic imaging services currently provided by the hospital, offering more information for a range of conditions. The new MRI scanner’s high quality image capture will help to improve the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses as well as reduce waiting time for patients. The high resolution image capture enables clinicians to view small complex structures, increasing the hospital’s capability for complex MRI scanning.
The scanner also features a new MRI technology called Silent Suite, a feature designed to improve patient comfort by significantly reducing the noise generated during an MRI scan and is silent for neuro sequences. The size and design of the scanner also helps to improve patient comfort and experience by reducing the sense of claustrophobia and accommodating a wide range of body shapes, sizes and clinical conditions.
The new scanner will be housed in a new modular building outside Ashford hospital - the first of its kind from Alliance Medical in the UK - and replaces the mobile unit that previously served the hospital for a number of years.
Leigh Melville, Infrastructure Director of Alliance Medical, said:
"The successful mobilisation of Alliance's integrated modular building at Ashford Hospital further demonstrates our ability to meet the needs of our partners by delivering clinically focused, leading edge imaging technology. The modular building offers significant improvements including enhanced comfort for patients and we are excited to be able to bring that to one of our most established NHS partners".
Russell Trenter, Regional Managing Director of Alliance Medical, said:
“Alliance Medical is committed to providing a high quality, comprehensive diagnostic service to our partners. We believe that this latest investment will help Ashford hospital to extend the range of examinations on offer, helping to meet demand and reduce patients’ waiting times for vital scans.”
Suzanne Rankin, Chief Executive at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“We are honoured to have Sarah join us to officially unveil our new MRI scanner. This cutting-edge technology is a sound investment in improving the experience of our patients undergoing scans and highlights our commitment to developing services at Ashford Hospital. It means that we can provide a full complement of MRI imaging at both our hospitals, to ensure the best levels of diagnosis and treatments and is a very positive development for the Trust.”
